India Arie wrote and released “I am Not my Hair” in 2006. This song caused a lot of people to self analyze and ask the question, does my hair really define me and my behavior in society? When I take a look back over my life, my hair has always been a staple or one of my best features. I’ve always gotten compliments about my hair for as long as I can remember.
After listening to the Lyrics of India Arie’s song, I believe the message of the song is one of importance. Yes I agree that we should not make any of our physical attributes define who we are as a person. Our character and spiritual essence should be what truly defines us.
Now I’ve heard some women say “my hair is a part of my identity”, especially for women with long flowing locks. If ever cut, they feel naked or like a part of them goes missing.
Is this the reason why India Arie wrote this song? “I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am a soul that lives within.” You be the judge; what are your thoughts?
